OMRÅ MEANS TO RETHINK

Områ (pronounced “ohm-rauw”) is a Norwegian word that for us means to consider and take care of resources. Områ: Norway’s first national sorting facility for plastic packaging - opening in 2025.

We think differently!

Områ is a high-tech sorting facility that sets a new standard for the life cycle of plastic packaging in Norway. Using innovative technology, we ensure that more plastic is reutilized as raw material for new products. Together, we are creating a circular economy where plastic waste gets a new life.

Total capacity: 90,000 tons of plastic packaging per year

Sorting capability: The facility sorts plastic packaging into ten different polymer qualities

Size: 13,000 square meters

Number of employees: 30–40 employees with full capacity. 2025: One shift

Commissioning: From the end of April 2025

Regular operations: November 2025

Operator: Stena Recycling

OwnersTOMRA (65%) and Plastretur (35%)

A national green plastic shift

The producer responsibility organization (PRO) Plastretur ensures the collection of used plastic packaging from all over Norway and transports it to the sorting facility Områ (in Indre Østfold). TOMRA, a company specializing in resource optimization technology (headquartered in Asker), ensures that the plastic is finely sorted into high-quality material fractions which can then be recycled into new raw material. This collaboration builds a new national infrastructure for the collection and material recycling of plastic packaging.
